Washington , U.S – In a significant move to safeguard Syria’s diverse social fabric, the Western Syria Development Organization has issued an official letter to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, expressing grave concern over the escalating violence targeting Syria’s ancient Christian community.

Syria is not just a nation on the world map; it is a living museum of human history and a testament to centuries of religious coexistence. It is home to one of the oldest Christian populations in the world, a community that has been an integral part of the region’s social, cultural, and economic life for nearly two millennia.

“Our responsibility extends beyond development projects; it is to defend the very human rights and pluralistic character that make Syria unique,” a spokesperson for the organization stated. “The protection of this ancient community is not merely a political issue; it is a profound human and moral imperative.”

The letter respectfully calls upon the Vatican, in its capacity as a global moral and diplomatic authority, to leverage its profound influence to champion the cause of Syria’s Christians. The appeal urges concrete actions to ensure their safety, dignity, and right to remain in their ancestral homeland without fear of persecution or violence.

Furthermore, the organization emphasizes that the threat of sectarian violence is not confined to a single group. The appeal explicitly extends to other vulnerable communities within Syria, standing in solidarity with “our brothers and sisters in the Alawite and Druze peoples,” who also face significant threats to their security and way of life.

“We firmly believe that the future security and stability of Syria are inextricably linked to the preservation of its beautiful diversity,” the letter concludes. “The unity of our social fabric is our greatest strength, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect it for all Syrians, without exception.”

The Western Syria Development Organization remains committed to its mission of promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development for all communities in Syria.
