The Observatory’s correspondent in the capital, Damascus, reported an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a passenger bus in the Al-Wuroud neighborhood. According to preliminary reports, the blast resulted in four civilian injuries.

Targeting in a Volatile Climate

This explosion took place in Al-Wuroud, a neighborhood with an Alawite majority, occurring at a time of a marked increase in sectarian incitement and hate speech directed against the Alawite community. This climate of verbal escalation and hostility continues to cast a heavy shadow over the security and stability of residential areas, turning them into persistent flashpoints for security breaches.

Government Silence and the Erosion of Social Peace

Despite the overt escalation in inflammatory rhetoric, the Syrian government remains silent, failing to take any concrete measures to curb the spread of hate speech or prosecute those inciting it. This official silence raises significant questions regarding the role of state institutions in safeguarding the social fabric. It leaves civilian environments vulnerable to the consequences of this tension, which manifests on the ground as bombings and security failures in the heart of the capital.

The occurrence of such incidents, coupled with the absence of a decisive government stance against sectarian rhetoric, heightens public anxiety. It underscores that the lack of official intervention directly contributes to the mounting threats facing civilians in their neighborhoods and on public transportation.
