Desecration in Sweida: Aprayer platform turned into a platform for provocation

A community's soul under attack

Source: local sources

Local sources report that a group affiliated with the so-called “De Facto Authority,” operating in the western countryside of Suwayda, has desecrated a holy site sacred to the Unitarian Druze community. The site, known as a “Majlis,” is a communal space of profound significance, traditionally reserved for funeral rites and mourning the deceased.

Eyewitnesses state that Mustafa Al-Bakour, accompanied by an armed group, entered the Majlis and repurposed it for a celebratory event they claimed was for fundraising. In an act that has ignited widespread outrage, they converted the prayer podium—specifically used for eulogizing the dead—into a stage for their activities. Photographic evidence circulating online appears to show individuals, including Al-Bakour, standing disrespectfully on the Sahn al-Salat (prayer area), a space considered deeply sacred.

More Than a Building: The Significance of the Majlis

To understand the gravity of this event, one must understand the role of the Majlis. For the Druze community, it is not merely a building; it is a cornerstone of cultural and religious life, a place where the community gathers to find solace and honour their departed in a dignified manner. Its violation is perceived not just as an attack on property, but as a direct assault on collective identity, religious sentiment, and social traditions.

A Community’s Outrage and the Risk of Escalation

The response from the people of Suwayda has been one of unified and intense anger. Community leaders and residents have universally condemned the act, labelling it a deliberate desecration and a blatant provocation. This incident transcends a local dispute; it represents a dangerous escalation in the tactics of armed groups, moving beyond physical control to the intentional erosion of social and religious pillars.

Such actions risk triggering deeper sectarian tensions and retaliatory violence, undoing years of local efforts to maintain stability and coexistence in Suwayda amidst the wider chaos of the Syrian conflict.

Our Stance: A Call for Protection and Respect

At WSD, we view the protection of cultural and religious heritage as integral to our humanitarian and development mission. The deliberate targeting of a community’s sacred spaces is a violation of fundamental human rights and a severe obstacle to building a sustainable and peaceful future for all Syrians.

We call on all parties involved:

1. To Respect Sacred Spaces: We urge an immediate end to the occupation and misuse of all religious sites and demand that their sanctity be unconditionally respected.
2. To De-escalate Tensions: We encourage all local and regional actors to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further polarization.
3. To Uphold Social Cohesion: We stand in solidarity with the people of Suwayda and all communities across Syria who strive to protect their identity and coexist peacefully.

The path to rebuilding Syria is paved not only with bricks and mortar but with justice, respect, and the preservation of its diverse social tapestry. Incidents like this one threaten to break that tapestry beyond repair. The international community must take note and support local voices for peace and mutual respect.
