Marking one year since its establishment, Western Syria Development has adopted an institutional approach that integrates direct emergency relief, community development, violation documentation, and international legal advocacy. Although the organization’s mandate expands to encompass human rights files and engagement with international organizations to highlight violations and support accountability mechanisms, field-level humanitarian and development interventions have remained the primary pillar for alleviating the immediate suffering of displaced families and communities from coastal regions and surrounding areas affected by sectarian violence and forced displacement.
This article highlights the key humanitarian initiatives and projects implemented by Western Syria Development on the ground to support displaced and affected Syrian families.
Humanitarian Context and Assessment Methodology
The organization’s humanitarian interventions came in response to the severe conditions faced by displaced Syrian families who fled the Syrian coast and neighboring areas following massacres, persecution, and targeted atrocities that threatened their safety and existence. Upon arriving at informal camps and settlements in northern Lebanon, these families endured harsh living conditions, including extreme winter weather, lack of privacy, weak protection mechanisms, and limited access to basic services.
To ensure aid reached those most in need, Western Syria Development conducted comprehensive field surveys and assessment studies. Beneficiary households were identified and selected based on objective, precise humanitarian criteria prioritizing the most vulnerable, in line with formal response programs and procedures.
“Ahl Al-Bait” Response: Transition to Alternative Housing
The Transitional Housing and Community Stability Project (Ahl Al-Bait Initiative) represented one of the organization’s flagship humanitarian interventions. The primary effort focused on relocating the most vulnerable families from camps to furnished, rented apartments for six months within host communities in northern Lebanon, providing a safer, more stable, and dignified living environment.
The project benefited 143 families (726 individuals) through the provision of 75 furnished apartments between September 2025 and February 2026.
Emergency Response and Education Support

Emergency Response in Al-Sumariya (Rural Damascus): An initiative supporting 45 families affected by forced displacement and property confiscation. The response included direct cash assistance to secure alternative housing, alongside legal support to document violations and submit them to international human rights bodies.

“Jami’ati” (My University) Program: A project supporting higher education in underserved communities, empowering high-achieving students in severely impoverished coastal rural areas. This is achieved by fully covering university tuition fees ($200 USD per student) in coordination with more than 20 local partner administrations, alongside direct educational support.
Comprehensive Relief Initiatives Package
In parallel with major projects, Western Syria Development implemented a set of complementary relief initiatives to address daily needs and mitigate the impact of harsh weather conditions:

Food Assistance Initiative (Feekom Al-Khair): Targeted 120 displaced Syrian families by providing essential food baskets and hygiene supplies to meet recurring household needs.

Winter Support Initiative (Laftat Dafa): Covered 122 displaced families, distributing winter jackets and essential supplies to withstand severe winter temperature drops.

Direct Cash Assistance Program: Delivered direct financial aid to 93 highly vulnerable families to address urgent humanitarian priorities.
Healthcare and Medical Interventions
Regarding field medical services, Western Syria Development operated a Mobile Medical Clinic that provided free healthcare services and medications to patients in Jabal Mohsen and surrounding areas, targeting individuals facing difficulties accessing conventional health facilities. The clinic served 46 patients.
In addition to mobile clinic services, medical interventions included coverage of surgical operation costs for critical cases requiring urgent surgical procedures.
The field interventions of Western Syria Development during its first year represented a tangible response to the suffering of displaced and affected families. Through its diverse programs and initiatives, the organization contributed to alleviating the burdens of displacement and preserving family dignity, alongside systematic violation documentation to safeguard victims’ rights, support accountability and redress pathways, and advance their cases before international human rights bodies.
