In a powerful and damning video statement, Dr. Ziad Zahr al-Din, the Syrian Consul General in Dubai, has announced his defection from the regime of De Facto Authority , delivering a severe indictment against its leadership and aligning himself with the cause of the Druze community in Suwayda.

A Senior Diplomatic Break

The significance of this defection cannot be overstated. Dr. Zahr al-Din was not a minor official but a senior diplomat representing the Syrian government in a key financial and diplomatic hub. His decision to publicly break ranks signals a profound loss of legitimacy for the Damascus regime from within its own diplomatic corps. In his statement, he explicitly declared, “I consider myself a fighter for my presence in this authority and I have stopped following any work under its administration,” formally severing his ties.

Accusations of Genocide and Regime Complicity

The core of Dr. Zahr al-Din’s statement was a shocking accusation. He stated that the city of Suwayda and the Jabal al-Arab (or Bashan) region have been subjected to a “barbaric attack, a crime of genocide, and a crime of ethnic cleansing.” He attributed this campaign to the forces of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham—the group formerly known as Al-Nusra Front—which he described as acting “in full cooperation and implementation with the terrorist organization ISIS through its members belonging to the Bedouin tribes.”

Most critically, he pointed the finger of blame directly at the highest levels of the Syrian government, asserting that this horrific crime was “planned and orchestrated by the highest levels of leadership in Damascus.” This accusation suggests a deliberate and coordinated policy of violence against the Druze-majority region, using extremist groups as proxies.

A Call for Self-Determination and a Druze Entity

Moving beyond condemnation, Dr. Zahr al-Din made a clear political declaration. He announced that he was adding his voice to those within the Druze community calling for self-determination and the establishment of a distinct political entity.

“I say that the future of the Druze entity is decided by themselves, through their leadership, headed by the spiritual leadership represented by Sheikh Abu Salman Hikmat al-Hijri,” he stated. This alignment with the prominent spiritual leader Sheikh al-Hijri grants significant weight to his political stance and underscores a unified front within the community against the assaults and the central authority in Damascus.

He further emphasized that the humanitarian needs of the people of Suwayda—including lifting the siege, the recovery of local forces, and the return of the kidnapped—are non-negotiable and are a responsibility for international humanitarian organizations.

The Implications of a Landmark Defection

Dr. Ziad Zahr al-Din’s defection is more than a personal decision; it is a political earthquake. It serves several critical functions:

1. International Awareness: It brings the crisis in Suwayda to the global stage, framing it not as a minor conflict but as a potential genocide with state collaboration.
2. Legitimacy for the Druze Cause: His high-profile status lends considerable legitimacy to the growing movement for Druze autonomy and self-defense.
3. A Blow from Within: It exposes deep fractures within the state apparatus, revealing that even those who served the regime at high levels can no longer justify its actions.

By choosing to stand with “the great Bashan Mountain,” Dr. Zahr al-Din has transformed from a diplomat of the regime into a diplomat for his people, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for the future of Syria’s diverse communities.
