At Western Syria Development, our mission extends beyond immediate humanitarian aid. We are dedicated to amplifying the voices of all Syrian communities on the international stage, advocating for their rights, safety, and future. In pursuit of this goal, our team recently engaged in critical diplomatic efforts in Washington, D.C., to directly address the ongoing crises facing Syria’s most vulnerable populations.
A Constructive Dialogue with Congressman Darrell Issa
Last Friday, our delegation held a substantive and productive meeting with the office of Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA). The meeting served as a crucial platform for a candid discussion on the complex and deteriorating situation in Syria, with a particular focus on the severe plight of the nation’s minority communities.
We presented our firsthand accounts and deep concerns to a receptive and well-informed audience. The congressman’s team demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of the realities on the ground, which paved the way for a meaningful exchange of ideas.
Highlighting Urgent Concerns: The Protection of All Syrians
During the meeting, our team detailed several critical issues that threaten the social fabric of Syria:
· The Alarming Decline of the Christian Community: We shared grave concerns regarding the safety of Syria’s Christian population. A community that numbered over 1.5 million people a decade ago has now dwindled to approximately 500,000. We emphasized that those who remain face an increasingly insecure environment, marked by a failure to protect them from the threats of jihadi forces and ongoing instability.
· Systematic Injustices Against All Communities: Our discussion broadened to address targeted attacks and persecution against Alawites, Kurds, Druze, and Sunnis. We detailed the alarming issue of illegal expropriation of property, a tactic used to displace communities and erase their heritage. Furthermore, we raised the critical case of the targeting and unlawful detention of religious leaders, which symbolizes the suppression of religious freedom.
A Foundation for Continued Engagement
The engagement with Rep. Issa’s office was both productive and forward-looking. The receptivity displayed affirms that our message is being heard where it matters most. We extend our sincere gratitude to Congressman Darley Issa for his leadership and for directing much-needed attention to the struggles of Syria’s minority communities.
This meeting marks a significant step, laying the foundation for continued dialogue and collaborative action.
